On May 19, 1972, the first concert by The Long Island Composers Alliance was held at the South Huntington Public Library. Since that time, close to 200 LICA concerts have presented nearly a thousand new works by more than a hundred composers. LICA remains the only organization devoted exclusively to the presentation, preservation, and promotion of performances of original serious music by composers living and working on Long Island (including Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk). The Long Island Composers Alliance Archive, founded in 1994 at the Instructional Media Center of the B. Davis Schwarz Library at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University, was renamed The Long Island Composers Archive in 2000.
Incorporated in 1975, LICA has been funded by various organizations and foundations including the Nassau County Office of Cultural Development, Suffolk County Office of Cultural Affairs, Huntington Arts Council, Hempstead Cultural Arts Center, Long Island Arts Council, N.Y. State Council on the Arts, International Jewish Arts Festival, Maldeb Foundation, Puffin Foundation, Prof. Edgar H. Lehrman Memorial Foundation, Key Bank, Chase Manhattan Bank, and Independence Savings Bank. Individual endowers of LICA are listed on programs and calendars in the following categories: Donor $50+, Friend $100+, Contributor $250+, Patron $500+. All donations are tax deductible.
Our members live and/or work (or have lived/worked) on Long Island, from Brooklyn to Orient Point. Teachers, doctors, business, performers... they are all composers on a professional level. Works by our members have been heard at Carnegie Hall, Town Hall, Merkin Hall, Kaufman Auditorium, and all over the United States, Europe, Israel, and the United Nations. They have been broadcast over radio and television stations locally, nationally, and internationally. An NPR series is planned, based on holdings of the LICA Archives at Long Island University's Instructional Media Center. Our members have scored films, ballets and TV movies, and have had works commissioned and performed by orchestras, opera companies, choruses and chamber ensembles in this country and abroad. Capstone Records (Richard Brooks, President) has begun a series of LICA CDs:
LICA is a decentralized performing arts organization. Performances are held over a wide geographical area ranging from Eastern Suffolk to N.Y. City (Carnegie Recital Hall) and beyond. In 1996 LICA presented its first European concert, at the Kleine Szene of the Semper Oper in Dresden, Germany. Emphasis is on regional performances heard at many locations including:

LICA has featured music by composers from Northwestern University and Composers Concordance, which have in turn programmed works by LICA composers on their concerts. Other exchanges are in process with composers from Connecticut, Kiev (Ukraine) and elsewhere.
In 1973, the first Music By and For Students concert was held. This annual event features performances and compositions by young people. Emphasis is on encouraging young composers and in recent years LICA has presented awards in the form of U.S. Government Savings Bonds for outstanding works. As another aspect of these concerts, students perform the works of composer members. This dual-purpose programming introduces them to the vocabulary of contemporary music and provides them with the opportunity to discover other young people who share their special gifts.
