New Music Greets Music Librarians
Meet in New York after Four Decades

The 70th annual convention of the Music Library Association (MLA), meeting in New York City for the first time in forty years, will take place February 19-25 at the Grand Hyatt Regency near Grand Central Station. Musical highlights will include several works written for the MLA and/or performed/conducted by their composers.

[The most prestigious events include a CUNY Graduate Center gala concert Friday at 6, and a Saturday night banquet, both open only to MLA members and guests. At the former, David Del Tredici will perform his "Virtuoso Alice"; pianist J.Y. Song will perform the world premiere of Chester Biscardi's "In Time Unfolding"--written as a gift to the MLA; Bruce Brubaker will play Philip Glass's "Mad Rush"; and various early American, Broadway, and jazz numbers will be performed by tenor Robert White and pianists Russell Miller and Fred Hersch.

At the banquet, this writer's own "Battle Cry of the Administration of the Music Library Association," the only work ever published by the MLA Newsletter, is scheduled to be performed, as it has been at several previous conventions, only this time conducted by the composer.]

To bring new Israeli choral piece

Ryna Kedar of the The Felicja Blumental Music Center and Library in Tel Aviv will be speaking at the Jewish Music Roundtable, Thursday February 22 at 11 a.m., along with YIVO sound archivist Lorin Sklamberg and Jewish Theological Seminary music archivist Eliott Kahn. Ms. Kedar is also bringing a new Israeli choral piece that will be conducted by Tom Moore, along with two songs composed/arranged by Sergio Roberto de Oliveira of Brazil, [on] a program Thursday or Friday evening [(TBA)].

Thursday afternoon at 1, the Bibliography Roundtable will feature a performance by tenor (and teacher of many Jewish Theological Seminary cantorial students) Paul Rogers of "The Whole Shoe," a recently completed aria from Marc Blitzstein's magnum opus, the opera Sacco and Vanzetti. It will be followed[, in the same room,] at 2:30, by the first meeting of the MLA's new Composer/ Performer Roundtable, at which soprano Helene Williams will sing two world premieres: Mary Donovan's aria, also from Sacco and Vanzetti; and "The Golem," a 12-tone setting of a poem by the Australian Jewish poet Alex Skovron. Soprano Patricia Magnuson will be accompanied by pianist Joan Harkness in George Boziwick's Emily Dickinson cycle, "When Time Is Over"; and pianist David Peter Coppen will perform Patrick Hardish's "Virginia Fantasy." Other composers whose works will be represented, and who will be present, include Eleanor Cory, Joel Mandelbaum, and Joseph Pehrson.

On Friday February 23, at 1 p.m., the Women in Music Roundtable will feature composer Paula Kimper showing video excerpts of her opera Patience and Sarah and. jazz vocalist Titilayo Ngwenya. And on Saturday afternoon, February 24, at 2 p.m., George Boziwick will interview Jerry Bock, composer of Fiddler on the Roof, The Rothschilds, and [so] many other Broadway shows.
